Pointers come in four equally correct markings and colors -black, liver, orange(yellow/orange/red fur with black nose and pigment),andlemon(yellow/orange/red fur with dilute or flesh-colored nose and pigment).Regarding the oranges and lemons, darker or lighter fur color does not designate the connotation of orange or lemon, the determination is made on the pigment of the nose, eye rims and paw-pads. Neither darker or lighter fur color is more correct for oranges or lemons. The amount of ticking (small spots or freckles) varies from almost none to heavily ticked. Patches (larger spots of color) also vary. Pointers can be both parti-colored (white background with few or many large or small spots and ticking) or solid-colored(one color, but with varying amounts of white at the throat, paws, legs, underside, chest; must have at least one solid-colored parent to have a solid-colored puppy). All of these patterns, markings, and colors are equally acceptable as the AKC standard notes: "A good Pointer cannot be a bad color". Not typically seen in U.S. are the tri-marked Pointers (tan located on the cheeks, over eyes, etc., the typical markings of a tri-marked dog such as tri English Cockers, English Setters, Gordon Setters, English Springers and so on), although they are in evidence and mentioned in the breed standards of FCI, and in European and Scandinavian countries.
Below, we've provided some photos of Solivia Pointers to demonstrate some of the colors, markings, and patterns present in Pointers. These photos also show the two equally correct head types for Pointers according to the AKC standard: the head with parallel planes (the top of skull runs parallel with the muzzle when viewed from the side) and the "dish-faced" head (the tip of the nose rises slightly higher than the muzzle at the stop).
